Wellington, New Zealand was once inhabited by the Maori. The explorer Kupe also roamed the area.

 

During 1839, European settlers began situating themselves in Wellington. These people named the area after Arthur Wellesley. William Wakefield was one of the founding settlers.

 

Captain Cook also explored Wellington.

 

During World War I and World War II, Wellington was part of an internment camp system.
